Swiatek’s Wimbledon Woes Continue with Upset Loss to Putintseva
The world’s top-ranked female player, Iga Swiatek, experienced another challenging outing at Wimbledon, losing in three sets to Yulia Putintseva. Swiatek, who has historically struggled on grass courts, saw her hopes for a strong Wimbledon performance dashed as she was defeated 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 by the 35th-ranked Kazakh player.
Despite having a 21-match winning streak and recently securing her fifth Grand Slam title at the French Open, Swiatek was unable to maintain her dominance on the grass. She had previously never lost a set to Putintseva in their four encounters, but this time, the slick grass courts proved to be her undoing.
In the intense atmosphere of Court One, Swiatek started strong, winning the first set. However, Putintseva quickly adjusted her strategy, launching a series of aggressive plays that Swiatek struggled to counter. The powerful groundstrokes that Swiatek is known for were met with equally forceful returns, and her usually agile footwork seemed to falter.
Putintseva capitalized on Swiatek’s discomfort, breaking her twice in the second set and twice more in the third, ultimately securing a three-set victory. This win propels Putintseva into a fourth-round match against Jelena Ostapenko.
For Swiatek, this marks another disappointing chapter at Wimbledon. Her best performance at the tournament remains last year’s quarterfinal finish, and she has yet to win any of her 22 singles titles on grass, nor has she reached a grass-court final.
As Putintseva celebrated her victory, Swiatek was left to reflect on another missed opportunity at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
